A Sunday Well Spent: The Municipal Hotel and Spa Liverpool

The Municipal Hotel and Spa Liverpool

I don’t know about you, but I often feel I waste Sundays. They typically tend to be a day of rest in the literal sense of the word, I slob on the sofa watching trash TV and am filled with regret come Monday morning, wishing I had done something a little more fulfilling. So in an effort to get the most out of my weekend, I decided a one-day city break was in order.

Liverpool, a vibrant city in the northwest of England, is renowned for its rich maritime history and cultural heritage. Situated along the eastern side of the Mersey Estuary, Liverpool played a crucial role in global trade and migration during the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, its historic waterfront is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, featuring iconic landmarks like the Royal Albert Dock and The Three Graces.

The city is synonymous with music, being the birthplace of The Beatles. Visitors can explore this legacy through attractions like The Beatles Story Museum and the iconic Cavern Club. Liverpool also boasts a thriving arts scene with institutions like Tate Liverpool and numerous theatres.

It has always been a great place to visit, the people are friendly and welcoming and the city has so many things to do that one visit is never enough. On this occasion, I was heading to The Municipal Hotel to enjoy a little Sunday afternoon R+R.

A gem in the heart of the city, the hotel boasts a rich history and heritage. Originally established as the city’s municipal offices in the early 20th century, this grand Edwardian building is an architectural marvel. Its ornate façade and intricate detailing reflect Liverpool’s prosperous past. Over the decades, it has witnessed significant historical events and transformations.

The impressive entrance is shrouded by a fabulous floral display in cascading rainbow hues to celebrate June being Pride month, a wonderful feature to welcome guests! After a seamless check-in I headed to my suite on the ground floor which was beautifully appointed with huge floor-to-ceiling windows give way to a superb view of the iconic Liver Building. The room is luxurious with stylish decor and plush furnishings and is equipped with a smart TV, a Nespresso machine, a laptop safe, a mini-fridge, mineral water and the most delicious Municipal chocolate bar, I love the attention to detail at this hotel. There is also a huge walk-in shower, modern hairdryer, fluffy bathrobes and slippers as well as delicious luxury toiletries. Every box ticked!

The jewel in the crown of the Municipal, in my opinion, is Palm Court, the magnificent bar and restaurant located centrally on the ground floor of the hotel. A grandiose and sweeping space with a decadent interior, huge palm trees and plush greenery intertwine with lavish furnishings and smaller lounges with comfortable sofas offer inviting spaces for more intimate occasions. The bar offers an exquisite ambience that blends timeless charm with contemporary luxury. The menu boasts an impressive array of expertly crafted cocktails, premium spirits, and fine wines, catering to even the most discerning palate. I also have it on good authority that Palm Court is the place to be on a Saturday night with regular live artists to entertain guests, but I was more than happy with my Sunday afternoon glass of Champagne, honestly, it’s the perfect place to be fancy!

On this occasion we were dining elsewhere, however, on my return visit I will be sure to visit Seaforth – “A beautiful British brasserie with a worldly exotic twist and touches of Liverpool historical trade past. Menus designed and inspired with global influences showcasing the colourful plates from Liverpool connections to land and sea.”

Or the Botanic Tearoom – “A beautifully designed tearoom offers guests a truly divine experience with a Liverpool twist including afternoon tea.”

The hotel also boasts a state-of-the-art fitness centre, spa and swimming pool where one can truly relax by taking a dip or enjoying an opulent spa treatment, these magnificent facilities give another dimension to your stay, it isn’t just a hotel, it is a sanctuary for both wellness and indulgence in the heart of Liverpool!

I enjoyed a restful night’s sleep in my comfortable suite before heading to enjoy a robust breakfast of fresh fruit and yoghurt followed by a freshly cooked English breakfast, which was delicious.

Although my stay at The Municipal Hotel and Spa Liverpool was short, it was incredibly sweet! I enjoyed the superb facilities and the attention to detail, from the spectacular building and decor to the knowledgeable staff and impeccable service – it’s a destination hotel in a fantastic location in one of my favourite cities. My advice? If you’re heading to Liverpool anytime soon, make this hotel your next phone call, tell them I sent you.
